Fords Unlimited Car Show 2015Some years, Mother Nature sends heat. A couple of years, she sent rain. This year, she sent both for our 29th annual car show held on July 26th at J.S. MacDonnell Park. When the alarm went off at 5 am, we were greeted by lightning, thunder and steady rain. Oh well, you win some, you lose some.

The rain did stop around mid-morning but was replaced by very high heat and humidity and the damage was done. Thankfully, 118 people braved the weather to attend our show. The MacDonnell Park facility held up well and we were still able to utilize our normal class locations without moving cars to the pavement. With a normal turnout of around 245 entries, we had lots of extra trophies this year.

Besides so many great attendance prizes, the show offered a 50-50 drawing that will benefit our toy drive that also had a second place prize of two Cardinal tickets. We also had two Cardinal baskets crafted by Donna Layton with four premium tickets donated by Jack Anderson. Thanks to Ron Sutton and EPC, we again had a refurbished laptop for a lucky winner. New this year was a silent auction with the help of Northern Tool & Equipment. As usual, we had a $100 grand attendance prize and $50 for club participation which was won the Mustang Club of St. Louis and given back to be donated to our toy drive.

We again held the Fairlane Club of America mini-meet at our show. The Fairlane Club really hung in for us with sponsorship and had eleven entrees on this rainy day. We even had two Torino Talladegas Despite the rain, we did have many swap meet and vender booths.

Each year we seem to have something unusual. This year, we only had two entrees in the Focus/Fiesta class and both tied for 1st place with an equal number of votes.

It was great to see many of our newer members get involved and see the workings of a car show. Most people who attend car shows have no idea of how much work and money goes into each show. The next years show planning starts right after the current show is complete. We look over problems, look for improvements and set classes for the following year. The park has to be reserved, sponsorship attained, the insurance purchased, getting the concession permit, ordering dash plaques and trophies, designing and ordering car show shirts, getting all of the forms printed, purchasing attendance prizes, setting up the registration and ballot counting setup, and the list goes on and on.

Our concessions are a project on it’s own. Sharon Apollo, with the help of Ken Farrar, Bill and Barb Giese and Syl Biermann did a masterful job of coordinating the difficult job of looking for bargains and making sure that we have all that we need . Great job to all of our concession workers.

For the show itself, there are too many to thank but special kudos go out to our chairman, Jim Biermann with help from Dan Kelly, Cindy Ahrens, Ron Schodroski, and Syl Biermann who did so much to make the show work so well. We also thank Terry Koch and the Simms for bringing their much needed golf carts. Of course, without the Dave Sinclair Ford sponsor - ship and all of our class sponsors, there would not be a car show. We are so grateful to our sponsors for their outstanding support.

Thanks to all of you who sold show classes, helped set up on show day, worked classification, registration, parked cars, manned the grills, worked concessions, counted ballots, helped with cleanup and storing the needed items for next years show, and helped out wherever needed. Great job everyone.
